Today we will be talking about Mental Health Awareness Month, and today’s word is a very intense word. I call it the “D,” the “silent D.” Today’s word is depression. Today’s quote is long, but it is powerful. “Having anxiety and depression is like being scared and tired at the same time. It’s the fear of failure but no urge to be productive. It’s wanting friends but hating to socialize. It’s wanting to be alone but not wanting to be lonely. It’s feeling everything at once and then paralyzingly numb.”
It is such a hard place to be and when you are there like I was, denial is common. Thinking, “This can’t be happening to me.” It is time for us as a community to realize it’s rampant, it’s everywhere. We have to remove the stigma.
If my tooth hurts, I run to the dentist. If I need new glasses, I go right to the eye doctor. If I hurt my shoulder, I go to an orthopedic, my back, a chiropractor. So why is it when your head is not in the right place, if it feels like you are in the middle of rush hour in a winter snow storm and you have nowhere to go, why can’t you get help?
I sought out a therapist. I have never said this publicly, but I spent 16 years in therapy. It was the greatest thing I ever did. I respect Howard Stern because he’s removing the stigma. He talks about it every interview, so I want you to know it’s ok to go. It helps. It works. I am living proof.
Depression is being colorblind and constantly told how colorful the world is. You don’t want to hear it. No one realizes how strong someone experiencing depression has to be just to get up, shower, and brush their hair. The hardest one is to get out of bed.
I actually had a buddy come to my apartment every morning just to make sure that I got out of bed. I am forever grateful. He knows who he is.
When you are depressed, you don’t control your thoughts, your thoughts control you. I wish people would understand that. No matter how hopeless and depressed you feel, I promise you from the bottom of my heart that if you reach out and get some professional help, let some friends and family in, I promise you that you won’t feel that way forever. You just have to keep going, keep believing. Never, ever give up!
